Long wait over for Indonesian maids - Bernama

BANDUNG (May 31, 2011): The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta ended a two-year freeze on Indonesian maids working in Malaysia, thus paving the way for their arrival in two weeks. Both countries agreed that the salary be determined by market forces but Indonesia requested that such wages not be lower than the minimum wage in Indonesia.
The wages for domestic maids in Indonesia range from Rp600,000 (RM212) to Rp1.2mil (RM424).
Also, the MoU set the initial fees employers have to pay at RM4,511. MoU also stated that maids be given one rest day in a week or one-and-a-half day's wage if they opt to give up the rest day and work instead.
Under the new MoU, employers have to be given a replacement maid or the agency fees refunded if the maid runs away, is found to be incompetent or does not meet health requirements. - Bernama

Latest news: Jakarta to lift bans on maids

PUTRAJAYA (May 17, 2011): Indonesia will lift a two-year moratorium on sending its maids to Malaysia with the signing of an agreement between both countries in Jakarta later this month.

Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, when contacted by Bernama, confirmed that maid agencies in Indonesia would be required to send only trained maids and to provide suitable replacements.

Some of the points that had been agreed upon by both countries dealt with the passport problem, cost structure and the off day for maids.

(The use of proper workwear / uniforms is highly encouraged, as it dealt with promoting morale and work effectiveness. In Indonesia, maid uniforms are common in many households.)

why wear uniforms?

Do your maids wear uniforms?

Employer #1 (male, 55): I like having Mindy wear a maid's uniform when she’s working at my house. Having her do so means that I won’t find myself unpleasantly confronted by what I might consider to be her unfortunate or inappropriate clothing choices if I happen to be at home when she is there. It also means that she isn't wearing out or soiling her own clothes when working for us in KL. And it clearly identifies her as an employee rather than the “lady of the house” when deliverymen or strangers or guests come to our door. In the end, I know what to expect when I see or spend time in the house with Mindy, and so does she.

Employer #2 (female, 37):  Firemen, policemen and even we in the corporate world have to wear a uniform. Waiters and waitresses also have to wear a uniform so why is it too much to ask the maids to wear one when they work? Employees of McDonalds and cleaners and cafeteria people at hospitals also wear a uniform.

Employer #3 (female, 42): It actually makes life much easier for the employer and employee (provided the employer provide the maid uniform).
The employee who may have at first dislike the idea may be pleased to see how much time they save getting ready for work when they know what they will be wearing every day. A simple and consistent routine shaves an unbelievable amount of time off of your morning routine. Also, they won't have to worry about ruining their clothes or wearing them out at work. The employer wins because it is a neater look for their house. Something simple always looks neater. I think in the end, people won't even mind, anything that makes life easier sounds good to me.
